Putting In Your New Air Conditioner: The ABC's Of Manual J
The weather is warming up and you may be thinking about having a new cooling system installed. When it comes to home comfort, you’ll obviously want to get the most bang for your buck. Making sure that your air conditioner is properly sized with Manual J is the best way to ensure that your home will be comfortable this and future summers. Manual J is a tool developed by HVAC engineers to determine the amount of cooling your home needs. Here are a few ways that you’ll benefit from having your HVAC technician use Manual J to size your new air conditioner:

Air quality

A correctly sized air conditioner will allow you to breathe easier with optimum air quality. A cooling system that’s too large will cycle on and off too frequently, and fail to provide adequate filtration and humidity control in your home. A properly sized cooling unit should produce humidity levels below 50 percent. Without properly removing moisture from the air, your home will feel cold and clammy, and may become an ideal environment for mold and mildew.

Best efficiency

Bigger isn’t always better. You wouldn’t buy a riding lawn mower for a small patch of grass, so why would you buy an air conditioner that’s too big for your home? A cooling system that’s too large will not meet your needs, will use up more energy, and will cost you more money to use. Conversely, an A/C that’s under-sized will have to overwork itself to satisfy your temperature requirements, and may have trouble sending conditioned air to every room.

Comfort

Your HVAC technician will employ Manual J to calculate the amount of heat that a cooling system should remove from your home (sensible cooling load) and the amount of humidity that should be removed (latent cooling load). Using these calculations will help determine the exact needs for your home in order to keep you and your family comfortable through the heat of summer in the Chicago area.
